Bruno Fournier is an analog photographer based in Paris, France, primarily working with a Hasselblad 500cm. He grew up in le Jura, France’s countryside, near Switzerland.
A self-taught photographer, Bruno began creating art at the age of twenty-two. He started working as an assistant to other photographers, learning photography techniques, and eventually picking up the trade himself. This experience led to a career in advertising and the fashion photography field. Working for magazines such as Jalouse, Marie-Claire, Madame Figaro, VS Mag, Icon. Spoon, Flaunt, Surface, Urban, and Vogue Gioiello. His work in fashion ultimately led him to pursue his first photographic project with nude models—a project that he continues doing to this day.
After several years of working in fashion, Bruno began to look for a theme to pursue a personal project. Working with motion shots at the time, it was an obvious choice for him to explore the same idea in the studio but include nude models. And, as he pursued his movement project further, his shoots moved to the outdoors.
Bruno Fournier uses his photography as a medium to convey the various qualities of the naked human form—power, humor, and eroticism—by exploring the movement and energy within. He enjoys using unexpected accessories and props. Aside from photography, he also enjoys working with collages.
Bruno’s work takes inspiration from the work of acclaimed photographers such as Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Martin Munkácsi, and Guy Bourdin. However, he attributes the city of Paris as his biggest influence—specifically museums, galleries, and classic movie theaters that inspire him daily.
His creative process consists of pursuing his ideas, with no hesitation, as loud music plays in the background, allowing for his artistic expression to flow while he works. A typical day in the studio for Bruno Fournier includes him finessing ideas, finding a nude model, and an outdoor setting to shoot in. He often allows for ideas to continue developing during the shoot, sometimes ending in a different direction.
However, he constantly develops his Amazon’s series, which showcases the power found in the nude female form. He describes his Amazons as “tough women who brandish their nakedness as a symbol of absolute freedom, in the struggle against a coercive world.” Bruno considers his shoots, both indoor and outdoor, and resulting photographs to be his favorite projects, some of the shots being iconic to his career, and even considering “Guerre Froide” to be his masterpiece.
Nevertheless, he considers the opportunity to keep doing photography his biggest accomplishment. And, hopes to continue pursuing his personal projects and have them displayed in exhibitions. Even in more publications such as his book, Bataille, which encompasses a retrospective of Bruno’s over the last fifteen years. Bruno's work has participated in exhibitions around France's galleries, ateliers, and installations. In addition, in 2018 he participated in the European Festival of Nude Photography.
There is no subject matter that Bruno Fournier will not explore with his photography as he continues to capture the complexity of the human’s inner emotions.
